Thupi: Leadership and management by
Rev. S. Neng Za Khup,
Executive Director, NECTAR, Shillong. Meghalaya.

What is leadership?
What is ZCF leadership and what is the current status of ZCF leadership?
What type of leadership is suitable in our context?
Reference: Bible Mathew 20: 24-28 “to serve not to be served”; 1Korinth 11:1 “follow my example as I follow the example of Jesus Christ”

He refer to the constitutional preamble for the excellent piece

What do we understand by term Zomi and who are the Zomis? Whether it is inclusive or exclusive?
Audience in unison “Zo tribes are those who understand each other dialect and are inclusive”
In this context why Kuki, Mizo, Hmar are not here in our midst when they should have been here too according to our definition of ZCF which is inclusive?
We always tend to have biased outlook and attitude other when we define ZOMI. Not only that we have put our language above all in our definition of Zomis and this itself becomes a barrier for someone from identifying themselves as Zomi

According to Mr. Keivom even Meitei language form part of Zomi dialect. ZO language is still in the making and there is no Zo language as such.

Time for reflection

ZCF umna te a bang jiaka mi khenkhat chia dawk jel? ZCF hi transit camp dan gual a imat khak u ahi ta maidiam, alemchan jiak, alou le mani ah (Congregration) umnai lou jiaka pang phat-? Bang dinga ZCF apat mi pawt dawk sek, kua maw adiam?

When we look at ourselves our difference is only 10% yet we harp and focus too much on this little difference that often lead us to fragmented or break away from the main body. We never attempt with sincerity to unite ourselves rather we play divide and rule policy. We are chauvinistic of our linguistic and ethnicity and uniqueness of our so called pi pu chawndan (ancestral and traditional customs)

We use English because we accept the language. Acceptance of our difference is critical in uniting us despite our identified insignificant difference. We become majoring in minor or minoring in major

Illustration of unity in diversity:
A Muslim man and Chin woman got married because of the love for one another and their language difference is becoming a minor. For instance the closeness of our language like ut si, kei, lou. We emphasis this little difference and create a wall between us.
Then who is a true leader?
Audience responses:-
• One who can influence and control other
• Some one who lead or go ahead of other
• Visionary
• Motivator
• Compassionate ( hepi na nei)
• Friendly ( mi tawh kipawl thei)
• Committed
We are all a leader in our life -as mother or father in our family
The greatest challenge and difficulties is to identify all these characteristics in one person
Visionary leader is glaringly lacking in Zomi community. We need to have burden to have a vision. Not every vision is a healthy vision. If it is God given it become more evident as day goes by.
Vision is followed by mission. For instance NECTAR mission is to spread the gospel likewise mission is again followed by strategy
A leader needs to have commitment for his vision, team work is crucial to fulfill the mission.
Styles or quality of leaders
• Designer/ developer-
• Implementor
• Motivator
• Team player,
Seldom do we find these qualities in a single person. Our community need: #1 types of leader the most someone who can have a vision, develop a strategy and chart the path towards pushing the goal. The other three are in abundance among the Zomis who can implement, motivate others and team player.

Now the question is who do we include in the community and why not others?
Why do we set up our own church wherever we live? What is the motive and purpose of it? Do we really define the purpose of our existence? May be the tithe is too tempting to forfeit? We waste our time and energy in maintaining our own house and lost focus of our mission.
Citing from the preamble different people group around us, should be the guiding principle in our existence.
It is time to turn around and change our mindset in our own congregation, clans and social forum and put to stop the game of us and them.

Management: (zekna/saina/vaihawmna)
Today we would look into four aspect of management:
1. Time: we all have 24 hrs and those who can use it prudently or judiciously make or unmake a person. Managing our time is critical in shaping and moulding our career
2. Money: we are weak in finance management. The more we have the more we spent. We are never self reliant.
3. Men (members): the most difficult thing to manage. It is difficult but not impossible. We need patience and perseverance, dedication, consistency and commitment to manage men to make him or her productive and worthy.
4. Organization: if we can manage the above three, it (organization) is taken care of. We should be cautious in selecting or choosing a leader to avoid crisis in future. Eg do not select someone out of prejudice, favor, sycophancy or nepotism. Select who have talent in the chosen field no matter their social, economic or family background.
It must be noted the lists are not exhaustive. They are stressed because it is true and applicable in the Zomi context.
An ideal leader should have the knack and skill to manage the above four. Choose and select someone who have interest and enthusiastic in the leading to the front. (advice from the facilitator) Ei Zo chaten loi upa pha Pathian za, chi le nam ngaina, khen chuam neilou, dawisak le lainat chuam neilou ima mo ahi.
{Reference: Hebrew 1:9 and Acts 20:14}

Second session:
May 2nd 2009.
By Rev.Dr.JM Ngul Khan Pau, Local pastor ZCF-G.
Topic: Dynamic Leadership
ZOMI CHRISTIAN thumal mangin loi upa(leadership) quality te anuai abang hin etthak na ei nei pi hi.

Z-Zeal (thalawp mamah). John 2:17 the zeal of thy house has eaten me up, John 4:34- my food is to do the will of HIM hat sent me and John 9:4-I must do the work of HIM who sent me while it is day.
Example evangelist on his dying bed: I wish to lie down one more time on the floor of bamboo made before I die. We all have one opportunity in our life and let live it the way that we do not regret later on. Let us complete the task God has given us while we have our being.

O-Organized Nehemiah—1.self management; 2- organize resources; 3-orgnaise workers; 4-organising against opposition; 5-organise relief. He entrust everyone to rebuild their own houses so that each one will build with their best; they know the availability of resources in their vicinity of the houses. Opposition is a blessing because it enables us to reflect upon our self and improve later on. Leadership demand sacrifice.

M-motive (ngimna) - Mark10:35-41, 42-45, Luke 9:57-58, Phil 1:17-18. What is our motive in becoming our leadership? We must set our motive right before we embark on taking the onus of leadership. If our motive were for self promotion and glorification, we will be a disappointment to God and the people we lead.

I- integrity (min sit lohna)- Prov.19:1, 22:1, Solomon la 2:15- the little fox is a nuisance destroying crops likewise the thing that destroy us are little. Pay equal attention to those little fox wandering before they are joined by their fleet when it would be impossible to defend against them. 2 Timothy 4:10.

C-committed (kipia zo) 2 Tim 2:3, 4, 2:5, 2:6- 10: Michael Phelps take refuge in their pool whenever their parents fight or ague. Water become his solace and bonded with.- warrior, farmer, sportsperson commitment towards achieving their goal. Leader should be committed and dedicated towards the vision of the organization

H-Hard workers (Nasep Kuhkal) Gen. 1:1- nasem pasian I nei hi, Acts 10:38- na hoih sem topa I neih hi, Acts.20:24 nasem hoih paul I mu hi, Luke: 5:1-5 Zan khua nga beng (they continue till dawn despite their failure to catch any. Hard work and industrious), Prov. 6: 6-8 Miksite tung pan bang sin ding I nei hiam? (Ants gather food for monsoon- ants die out of tiredness) They never cease to work. They do not wait for someone to come along and lead them. Team work is the mantra.

R-Relational (kizopna)-all relationship revolve around personal needs; contact alters relationship- it change one inter personal relationship after meeting them face to face; good listening, interest in the person is the best way-call person by name and give recognition to other, be friendly smiling and warm, meeting the need of the person is not money alone it is more than that. Emotional investment is worthwhile.

I-Influence (Thu zaw)- good or bad influence, influence as role model, in ambition, motive, character, Jesus influences His disciples. Swiss moral story- of 7 years of by who pledge to his father that he will follow wherever he go, walking in the snow with umbrella. He followed his father footsteps by jumping. The father drop by at shop to drink (alcoholism) and his son words haunt him Dad I will follow you wherever you go”. He stops drinking from that day onwards.

S- Servant hood (Sila Nasepna) John; 13: 4-15 (Jesus wash his disciple legs), Phil 2:7-8, 2: 19-20, 2: 22, 23, 24 (servant hood leadership, as a Christina we are servant not the boss. We are to serve people)

T-trust (muan huaina)- Mat 25:21, Luke 16:10, Luke 19:17 (you are faithful with little and you will be give more because you are trustworthy). But in our world, we have few people who are trustworthy. Faithful in small things is important.

I-innovative (hih dan thak). Lord do innovative things (Josh 6 chapter), I kings 6:1 to 7, 5000 feeding. What we need is an innovative and visionary leader to lead us on..

A- Available (mu thei gige) God is available 24/7 hrs. Luke 18:40, john 3: 3,4. Someone who do not have protocol.
Politician, minister, leng le lal te gual hilou,, bang tik lai ale a muthei (24x 7) le hothei jing. Panpi ding le ngaitha dinga kiman jing.

N-noble character (gam tathoih) - John 13:35- By loving one another the world will know that you are my disciple, Heb.11:!6- God is not ashamed of them (us), we long for appreciation, recognition and acknowledgement in public. John Banyan, Pilgrim Progress author, was once appreciated by one old woman after his speech and he replied that the devil has already told me during that. The moral is that we are so self conscious and hungry for praise and recognition. Mat 5:16. A true leader did not crave for recognition nor popularity. Leader always encourage building and exhibiting character befitting his/her calling.

A walk down memory lane from his Gen. Secretary report about hymn that has change his life as a person and servant of God “The comforter has come”.

Seminar nuam tak chu buaina umlou in law ting takah jaw ahi tai. Pastor T.K Lianpu pauchap na nei in lun khakna nei ahi.
