The Magic Ring - Dog and Cat - A Thadou Folk Tale Retold
http://e-pao. net/epSubPageExt ractor.asp? src=manipur. Folks.Folk_ Tales.The_ Magic_Ring

Once upon a time, there lived a poor widow and her son. The boy worked hard to help his mother. One day, as he was going to market to sell a cock, he found a python trapped in a net. Some Kabuis had set the trap.

Seeing the helpless python, he felt sad. He made a plea to the Kabuis, "Please don't kill it. Set it free. You can take my cock in its place." The Kabuis took his cock and freed the python.

With no money to buy food for himself and his mother, the boy returned sadly. On the way, a stranger stopped him and said, "Don't be afraid. I am the python you saved. I owe you my life, dear friend. Please come to my house. My mother will be pleased to see you. She will give a big reward to you."

The boy was surprised and confused. The stranger went on, "Don't accept anything. Just ask her to give the ring she wears. Not knowing what to do, he simply followed the stranger.

They reached a big lake. The stranger spoke, "Friend, my family lives inside the water. We shall have to dive." Before the boy could turn back, the stranger caught his legs and pulled him in the water. A little later, they reached a spot where there was a huge mansion. They went inside.

There, he found the stranger's parents waiting for their son. After listening to the story, the parents were very happy. The mother said gratefully, "You have saved the life of my only son. I am extremely pleased. The house is full of valuable wealth. Take as much as you want." The boy was unable to speak.

Seeing this the son spoke, "Mother, he is very poor. If you want to reward him, please give him the ring on your finger." "My dear, he can have whatever he wants but I cannot give him the ring," replied the mother.

"Mother, I am your only son. He saved my life and you cannot give him even a ring! It seems that your ring is more precious than my life. I will go and fall in the trap again. Let those men kill me. I don't want to live anymore."

The mother was worried. She immediately gave the ring to the boy, saying, "Nothing is more precious than the life of my son. Take the ring". The son felt happy and said "Come, I will take you to the surface of the lake".

On the way, he told the boy that it was not an ordinary ring, "It is a magic ring. When you make a command, it will provide whatever you want. But be careful. Keep it a secret," he continued.

As soon as he reached home, the boy asked his mother to serve food. The mother took out empty plates and scolded him for not bringing food. Then the son went into the kitchen and ordered the magic ring to bring the choicest dishes for them. The mother was surprised to see the tastiest dishes in front of her. In this way, with the help of the magic ring, they began to live happily.

One day, the son requested his mother to go and ask for the hand of the village Chief's daughter for him. The mother approached the Chief, "O great one, please give your daughter in marriage to my son." The Chief laughed, "Look at yourself. You are a poor widow. How can you dream of your son marrying my daughter?"

"My son will make your daughter happy and comfortable, O great one," replied the mother.
The Chief wanted to humour her. He said, "If you want my consent, bring a big bull, a sack of gold and a diamond necklace tomorrow morning. Only then, will I say yes."

The mother returned home sadly. She told her son about the Chief's demands. Her son laughed, "Mother, be ready to go to him tomorrow morning." At midnight, he ordered the magic ring to build a mansion with several servants. He also ordered the ring to provide all the things the Chief demanded.

In the morning, the Chief was surprised to see the widow with all the things. He could not refuse now. Thus the widow's son and the Chief's daughter were married.

As they lived happily many people were jealous of them. One day when they visited the Chief's house, a servant stole the ring. On discovering the loss, the son felt sad. He called his dog and cat near him, "Find my ring. Don't come back until you find it." The dog and the cat went in search of the ring. They searched for days but did not find it.

THE POWER OF THE MANGER:J.M. Ngul Khan Pau

(Tora!Tora!Tora! to Gomenasai)

It was on December 7, 1941, at 3:00 A.M. as the Japanese fleet moved through the darkness of the Pacific Ocean men on every ship began to stir. This was the hour; this was the moment of truth. The waiting was over. The battle was about to begin. From headquarters came the signal-"Climb Mount Nataka.” That meant the attack was on.
For one man it was the greatest moment he had ever known. The long years of training had paid off, the countless hours of drills repeated over and over again. He was the man chosen to be the leader.

When Mitsuo Fuchida woke up, he dressed, ate breakfast, then pulled on his heavy fur-lined flight jacket. Then he went to the operations room for a last-minute intelligence briefing. Tying a white headband with a red circle around his flying cap, he jumped into his plane. At 5:30 A.M. he took off, the first plane in a squadron of two hundred planes. From the carrier decks of the Hiryu, the Soryu, and the Atsugi, plane after plane followed him in two waves until the total reached 350, the largest airborne naval assault in history.

As the planes sped across the 230 miles that separated them from the island of Oahu, not a word was exchanged among the pilots. The die was cast, the decision had been made. And as Mitsuo Fuchida came across the final mountain that separated him from Pearl Harbor, he cried out the prearranged code word that meant total surprise had been achieved. In his excitement he repeated the word three times-"Tora! Tora! Tora!”
The first bombs fell at 7:53 A.M. Pearl Harbor time. As battles go, it was over quickly.

Within an hour and a half the second wave had returned to the carriers. The damage was done. Behind them, the Japanese pilots left a sea of flaming wreckage. Before it was all over, the death count would reach 2,403. To this day it remains the single greatest naval defeat in American history.

The End of the Age of Innocence
That day-December 7, 1941, a day that lives in infamy-one world died and another world was born. It was the end of the Age of Innocence. Innocence was gone forever, and in one tragic moment America was jerked into the modern era. Up until that hour, America had basically been a sleeping giant, taken for granted for the other nations of the world. After Pearl Harbor, it would never be taken for granted again. But from that day, and the things that followed from that day, America became and still remains a superpower. Seen in that light, the attack on Pearl Harbor was the single most important event in the 20th century. It was a catalytic event, one which would change the entire world history.

Because Pearl Harbor is so well-known, many people don’t realize that there were two other epochal events that took place that same week. One of the events took place on the outskirts of Moscow, when, after a desperate battle, the Russians decisively turned back the German army. The Russians stopped the Nazis at the very edge of the city. Little noticed at the time, that German defeat changed the course of World War II. Up until that moment, Hitler’s grand design had been to quickly defeat Russia, sue for peace with England, and thus keep the United States out of the war. Once he knew he could not conquer Russia, he knew his only choice was to go west, even though that meant America would eventually enter the war. Thus the course of history was changed two days before Pearl Harbor.

But that’s not all. The other great event, totally unnoticed and unreported at the time, took place in Washington the day before Pearl Harbor. On December 6, 1941, a new U.S. government committee, code named S-1, met in Washington. Its subject: the feasibility of constructing something called the atom bomb. What happened in three events-bunched into a tiny three-day window of time-not only galvanized a nation but also changed the balance of power and ultimately redirected the course of human history.

Impact of Pearl Harbor:
What happened at Pearl Harbor led directly to World War II, the bloodiest war in world history. Before it was over some 25 million people would die. If you take the long view of history, you can see that what happened at Pearl Harbor led eventually to Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and set the stage for the Cold War, which itself led us into the Korean War, and ultimately to the War in Vietnam and the crisis in the Middle East. To put it another way, there is a dotted line that stretches from Pearl Harbor to Baghdad. What started 50 years ago yesterday has ramifications that are with us a half-century later.

He hate the Japanese:
We’re back now at Pearl Harbor. It’s a few months after the attack and America is trying to come back from the great defeat. They’re re-arming and getting ready for all-out war in the Pacific. A man named General Jimmy Doolittle is chosen to lead a daring daytime bombing raid over Tokyo. Militarily the bombing raid has little affect on the war, but it has a profound affect on both the Japanese and the American mindset. It boosts our morale and sends a signal to the Japanese that they are not safe on the island fortress. Unfortunately the bombers run out of fuel and are unable to make it to friendly Chinese airstrips. Most of the pilots are forced to bail out over hostile Japanese-held territory.

One of the men who bailed out was Jake DeShazer. He was held in a prisoner of war camp for nearly four years. During that time he was beaten, mistreated, and nearly starved to death. By his own admission, he hated the Japanese with a fierce and passionate hatred. He hated the little Japs with their creepy yellow skin. He hated the way they looked. He couldn’t stand their language.

When the Americans in the prisoner of war camp asked for some reading material, they were given an English-language Bible-14 months later. The Bible was given to the officers first, but eventually was passed to Jake DeShazer. For the first time in his life, he read the Bible. As he read the story of Jesus, the message of forgiveness seemed to overwhelm him. And there, in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in China, Jake DeShazer gave his heart to Jesus Christ. By his own testimony, in that one transforming moment, all the anger was gone. All the hatred was gone. All the animosity was gone. He even started loving his Japanese guards.
After the war was over, Jake DeShazer came back to America, enrolled in Seattle Pacific University, and later returned to Japan as a missionary, where he preached and wrote gospel tracts.

I was a Prisoner of Japan:
The year is 1945. And the Japanese people are trying to put their lives back together. Mitsuo Fuchida was discharged from the army and returned home to work on the family farm. His fighter pilot days were done forever. For a while, he thought he would be tried as a war criminal, but instead he was called as a witness but he was never accused of any war crimes.

In 1950 Mitsuo Fuchida rode the train to Tokyo. As he was walking across the platform, someone handed him a little piece of paper. He glanced at the title-"I Was a Prisoner of Japan"-and stuffed it into his pocket. He thought it was another story of Japanese atrocities.

It wasn’t. It was Jake DeShazer’s story of how he had come to Christ. As he read the story, he was captivated. It told of a man who once hated the Japanese but now gave his life to reach them for Jesus Christ. The tract caused Mitsuo Fuchida to find a Bible and to begin reading it. As a Buddhist, it was all new to him. He was enthralled by the story of Jesus Christ, especially by the story of crucifixion, and most especially by the words from the Cross-"Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.”

These are the exact words of Mitsuo Fuchida:

I was impressed that I was certainly one of those for whom He had prayed. The many men I had killed had been slaughtered in the name of patriotism, for I did not understand the love which Christ wants to implant within every heart.
Right at that moment, I seemed to meet Jesus for the first time. I understood the meaning of his death as a substitute for my wickedness, and so in prayer, I requested Him to forgive my sins and change me from a bitter, disillusioned ex-pilot into a well-balanced Christian with purpose in living. That date, April 12, 1950, became the second “day to remember” of my life. (Moody Monthly, December, 1971, p. 29)

As the news of his conversion spread, his friends and family members were shocked. There were huge headlines which read, “Pearl Harbor Hero Converts to Christianity.” His old war buddies came to see him, to try to convince him to give up this crazy idea. But they couldn’t. And so the man who led the attack on Pearl Harbor became a Christian, and a flaming evangelist for the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Gomenasai:
The story is not yet over. It was back in 1941 again. This time we are on the ground with a nineteen year old kid from Brockton, Texas named Joe Morgan. He was raised as a Baptist and at one point felt God calling him to be a preacher. But those plans were set aside when he joined the navy in order to see the world. When the attack came, he was paralyzed at first but then grabbed a gun and started firing wildly at the attacking Japanese. He stayed there all day and all night waiting for the planes to come back, but they never came back.

After the war, Joe Morgan went back to seminary and he too became a preacher. Where do you suppose his first church was? In Hawaii.
By his own testimony, he struggled for years with hatred for the Japanese. He simply couldn’t forgive them for what they did at Pearl Harbor. He hated them for all the atrocities in the Pacific. He said, “When we dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, I cheered. I was happy that we had finally killed so many of them.”

Years passed, and he was still a pastor on Oahu, eaten up with anger and bitterness. Then in 1956, a friend told him about an unusual guest speaker who was coming to a local Methodist church. It was a man from Japan named Mitsuo Fuchida, the man who led the attack on Pearl Harbor.

With great skepticism, Joe Morgan went to hear him. Afterward he confronted Fuchida and told him he had been on the ground at Pearl Harbor. Fuchida bowed slightly, and then very gently said Gomenasai, which means “I’m sorry.” Then the man who led the attack reached out his hand to one of the men he was trying to kill. Let Joe Morgan tell the rest of the story in his own words:

As he reached out to shake my hand, I experienced the miracle of my lifetime. The anger and hatred were gone. God had let me forgive. (USA Today, Friday, December 6, 1991, p. 2A)

What a story of the grace of God. It started on the deck of a Japanese aircraft carrier. It led to a Japanese prisoner of war camp in China. It continued on the platform of a Japanese rail station. It climaxed at a Methodist church in Hawaii 11 years later. This Christmas, never forget the power of the lowly manger. It is more powerful than the majestic throne of King Herod and the most powerful emperor of that time Julius Ceaser. If you enthrone Him in your heart; you will experience the true Christmas.

Good News of Great Joy

Good News of Great Joy
(Luke 2:8-14) J.M. Ngul Khan Pau

Caesar Augustus, the adopted son of Julius Caesar was the emperor who issued a decree that everyone under his rule should be taxed. He needed money to raise an army to control his vast empire and also to live in luxury. He attempted to make himself a god, and wanted to be worshipped. He was fulfilling the prophecy of Micah so that Joseph and Mary could go to Bethlehem to register for taxation (Micah 5:2). He was merely a tool in God’s hand so that the baby in the womb of Mary would establish a kingdom which will never come to an end. The angel’s message to the shepherds was “tidings of great joy.” Therefore, the gospel is “good news,” as the Greek word literally means. Let us look at some points why it is good news for us even today.

I. THE GOOD NEWS REMOVED FEAR (vs. 10)

It is only natural that the humble shepherds would have been in fear when the invisible, the unknown, suddenly became visible to them. The angel said, “Fear not,” but he did not leave them there. He gave the reason why they did not need to fear. He told them the “glorious tidings” that a Messiah was born. We have four “fear-nots” stated by angels in the context of the birth of John the Baptist as the fore runner and of the Lord Jesus.

(i) Fear not of salvation: (Luke 2:10, 11) The angel told the shepherds they need not be afraid as the
Savior was born for them. God sent his best gift to us in the person of Jesus Christ. He is our salvation
and peace (Eph 2:12-14).
(ii) Fear not of the humanly impossible: (Luke 1:30, 35, 37) Mary asked Gabriel how would she bear a child for she was virgin. He answered her by saying that the “Holy Spirit will come upon her and the
power of the Almighty will overshadow her…For nothing is impossible with God.”
(iii) Fear not of unanswered prayer: (Luke 1:13) Zacharias, the priest and his wife Elizabeth must have been praying to God for a child. They were growing old and yet without the answer to their prayers. The angel informed them the good news that their petitions have been heard and Elizabeth would bear a son; and he would give him the name John.
(iv) Fear not for immediate obedience: (Matt 1:20, 24) When Joseph was planning to secretly divorce
his betrothed wife Mary who was with a child, God revealed his plan to Joseph in his dream. He immediately obeyed the Lord and took Mary as his wife.

II. THE GOOD NEWS BROUGHT GREAT JOY (vs. 10)

The angel informed them the tidings of great joy which is for all the people. The King of glory did not enter this world with pomp and glory but in the weakest and smallest way, as a baby. The good news is the source of great joy, all through human history. It is the great joy of light; “The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great light, and those who were sitting in the land of shadow of death, upon them a light dawned” (Matt 4:16). The hope of the centuries has been fulfilled. For this reason, the good news is joyful to all the people; especially to those who looked forward to His coming. He, who was born, will save them from sin and death. He will give blessedness of joy to those who will receive Him.

This joy is what Max Lucado called “Sacred delight.” In his book The Applause of Heaven, he stated that the Lord was in poverty; he never owned even the most basic mode of transportation and was dependent upon the handouts for his income. He knew what it meant to have no home…. He was accused of a crime he never committed. Witnesses were hired to lie. The jury was rigged. No lawyer was assigned to his defense.

A judge swayed by politics handed down the death penalty. They killed him. He left as he came, penniless. He was buried in a borrowed grave, his funeral financed by compassionate friends. He should have been miserable. He should have been bitter. He had every right to be a pot of boiling anger. But he wasn’t. He was joyful. He was joyful when he was poor. He was joyful when he was abandoned. He was joyful when he was betrayed. He was even joyful as he hung on a tool of torture, his hands pierced with six-inch Roman spikes. Jesus embodied a stubborn joy (p.8-9). Those who are willing to depend completely on him will also experience this joy in the midst of hardships and trials. For, He is the source of great joy.

III. THE GOOD NEWS IS SALVATION (VS. 11)

The good news is that a Savior was born. The angel used three names to identify the One who would bring this salvation. First, “Savior,” a Hebrew word meaning rescuer, then “Christ,” a Greek word for “the anointed one, the chosen one.” He is the fulfiller of the promises of God and the One who has been anointed by God as the great Prophet, Priest and King. The third was a word used by Greek speaking Hebrews to refer to God Himself. So Jesus is to be the rescuer, the anointed one, God Himself.

Man is sinking in the mud of sin and there is no way out unless a rescuer, a savior comes to help. The Psalmist exclaimed this experience when he said, “He brought me up out of the pit of destruction, out of the miry clay. And set my feet upon a rock, making my footsteps firm” (Ps. 40:2-3). The pit is called by different names such as horrible pit, pit of noise, the desolate pit and the pit of tumult. The miry clay is a clinging clay that one can easily entangle and slip into it.

Man is under the bondage of sin. Without the Savior, he is enslaved without any hope of liberation. Man may break away from the bondage of ignorance, may even fly out into the space beyond the law of gravity. Yet, apart from the Rescuer; he is a slave of sin (John 8:34). Only the Son of God can give us true freedom from sin (John 8:36). If you are in Christ you are a new creation (II Cor. 5:17). Your sins are forgiven. Your guilt is atoned for. Your past is removed. Your future is secured. You have peace in your heart. You have purpose in your step. You have a song on your lips. You are saved from hell. You are put right with God. You are going to heaven. But you must be born again! That’s God’s gospel (Anne Graham Lotz, Just Give me Jesus, p. 70).

IV. THE GOOD NEWS GIVES REAL AND LASTING PEACE (vs. 14)

The host of angelic choir presented a special song singing, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom He is pleased.” They predicted that this peace will come when we give glory to God in the highest. Peace does not come when the arms race ends. Peace will not come by treaties and peace accord. The angels give us the precondition for peace; that we give glory to God in the highest.

The tragedy with our world today is that we have made war glorious and peace dull and uninteresting. We have glamorized war; we have turned this peaceful earth into a place of terror and hatred. We have deitified and idolized the suicide bombers and the religious fundamentalists. Peace is the gift of God in the person of Jesus Christ; our hearts yearn for this Prince of Peace.

It is very surprising that this glorious message of peace was given to the lowly and the despised shepherds. They were outcastes from the respectable society as they could not keep the commandments of the law. Their honesty and integrity were questionable so they were not allowed to testify in the court of law. To them, God revealed the birth of his Son and the purpose of his mission, that is, peace on earth.

Real and lasting peace is from God and not of the world. When Christ was born, some form of external peace (the “pax Romana”) did prevail. The emperors of those days might have provided a semblance of peace by suppressing and subduing other nations; they could not and cannot give peace of mind. The
Prince of Peace will give inner harmony and tranquility wherever he rules.

Kennon Callahan, in his book Twelve Keys for Living (Callahan, 1999. p.81) stated that those who have received this peace from God are mighty instruments in the hand of God in transforming our neighborhood and the world. Let us realize our position and role in bringing about peace wherever we are living.

Hope is stronger than memory
We are the people of hope.
The cradle of Bethlehem is stronger than thrones of kings;
We are the people of Bethlehem.
The new born Savior is stronger than the armies of the world;
We are the people of new life.
God leads us in new paths of leadership and mission;
We are leaders in God’s mission.
Light is stronger than darkness;
We are people of light.
We are the Christmas people
We are the people of wonder and joy, Amen.

Siamsin Seminar III held at Tedim

Awakening Tedim

Awakening Tedim

The recently concluded Siamsin Seminar III held at Tedim was an eye opener.

This seminar hosted by the Zomi University students at Khuado Hall with resource persons like Pu Chin Sian Thang President Zomi National Congress, retired Professor Dr C Thang Za Tuan and Pu Zozam Cin Pau brought to light the hopes and aspirations of youths in general and university students in particular.

Although Pu Chin Sian Thang was not allowed to speak or even attend the seminar his presences alone woke up the sleepy town of Tedim. Many of the Tedim towners did not attend the seminar for fear of Burmese Junta’s rebuke or worse.

When the students’ President Tg Zam Thuam asked permission for the ZNC President to attend from the Burmese Junta they threatened to stop the seminar altogether. It seemed the Junta was scared for the leader to speak. Lesson learned.

The Tedim speaking population are often accused of being too apolitical and not confronting the Burmese Junta enough by other Chins and rightly so. Even though there are thousands of Tedim refugees hardly one or two ever spoke up against the Burmese Junta or even ever questioned their government. The Tedim Chins are more concerned for their livelihood, business and education, than working for democracy. Though now things should change. I have this feeling that Tedim town and its people have just been awoken.

The Tedim Chins should know the Junta is scared to see the Tedim town rebel against it. The Tedim Chins should know when freedom of speech and expression is curtailed the Junta is never serious about its “road to Democracy or their (s)election in 2010.

Wake up my brothers for the time has come for change.

Change we shall embrace with our all, and fight any and all resistance for change.

Chin State - A mountain of troubles

Chin State - a mountain of trouble

LONG, 7 December 2009 (IRIN) - In the remote western Chin state, Ngite
Pan, 46, ekes out an existence, feeding herself and her 15-year-old
daughter by planting millet. Occasionally, she sells a traditional
intoxicating brew called Khaung-Yay, also made from millet, which earns
her about US$4 a month.

It is the widow’s only source of
income, and most of this money is spent on buying rice to supplement
the millet - but it is not enough.

“Our main problem is getting enough food. There are many days in a year
when we have to skip a meal,” Ngite Pan said from her bamboo home in
the isolated mountain village of Rong Long in the south. “We see no way
out to escape these hardships.”

Mountainous Chin, bordering India and Bangladesh, is Myanmar’s poorest
state. Some 70 percent of its population lives below the poverty line,
rising to 81 percent in rural areas, according to UN agencies in
Myanmar, compared with a third of the population in the country as a
whole.

The Chin, numbering an estimated 500,000 in the state, with over half a
million more in the rest of the country, make up about 1 percent of
Myanmar’s population.

They comprise six main ethnic groups, including the Asho, Cho, Khumi, Laimi, Mizo and Zomi, with dozens of sub-groups.

Access for aid workers is restricted and agencies say there is not
enough basic data about the population, but that its problems are
numerous.

Challenges include “structural deficiencies, chronic food shortages
[and] widespread food insecurity”, Christophe Reltien, Head of Office
of the European Commission’s Directorate General for Humanitarian Aid
(ECHO), told IRIN.

For those unable to make a living off the land, a marginal livelihood
can be made scavenging for timber or bamboo, cane resin, honey and
orchids in steep, mountainous areas.

Acute food insecurity

Most of the population relies on shifting cultivation for their
livelihoods. However, there are limited viable farmlands and growing
population pressures, in turn leading to shorter field rotation cycles,
poor soil fertility and crop yields, according to the World Food
Programme (WFP).

Chronic food insecurity has been made worse by a rat infestation, which started in 2007 and is still destroying crops.

“The population of Chin State is vulnerable due to the rat infestation
and a general decline in agricultural productivity, shortage of
employment opportunities, low levels of education, poor water, poor
sanitation and lack of road infrastructure,” said a joint Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO)/WFP crop and food security assessment published this year.

Because of the rat infestation, more than 100,000 people are estimated to need food aid, according to the Canada-based Chin Human Rights Organization (CHRO).

In a September 2009 report,
CHRO found that up to 82 percent of farmland had been destroyed in
certain regions, while more than 50 people died from the effects of
extreme malnourishment, mostly children.

“People are
going to the jungle and picking up roots and leaves and yams to eat.
They eat food which in normal situations they would not eat. There are
lots of health problems because of this,” Salai Bawi Lian, CHRO’s
executive director, told IRIN in Bangkok.

Beyond the immediate food crisis, Salai Bawi Lian said the Chin needed
help in moving away from shifting cultivation to more sustainable
agriculture.

Rights violations

Rights groups say the state’s population is vulnerable to rights abuses
by the government’s military, known as the Tatmadaw. A report
by Human Rights Watch (HRW) in January documented instances of torture,
arbitrary arrests and detention, and forced labour, although the
government has outlawed the practice.

“Those called
for labour are assigned to work on government projects without
compensation or daily provisions and under threat of punishment,”
stated the report.

Myanmar is a majority Buddhist country but more than 80 percent of the
people in Chin State are Christian, making them the target of
discrimination, according to activists. Thousands of Chin have fled to
Malaysia and to Mizoram state in India, where they share common ethnic
ties, but still face insecurity and poverty.

Health and education lacking

A WFP survey
of the food security situation in seven townships in May 2009 found
that households were mainly concerned with food, health and education,
but the majority were unable to afford these basic necessities and were
forced to rely on loans.

According to the HRW report,
there are only 12 hospitals, 56 doctors, and 128 nurses in the state.
Some hard-to-reach villages complain that government health workers
only visit twice a year.

Education is also lacking, with no universities in the state and 1,167
primary schools, 83 middle schools and 25 high schools.

“There is a dire lack of school facilities in many villages in Chin
State, forcing Chin children to walk to distant towns and villages or
pay expensive boarding fees to attend classes,” said the State of the
World's Minorities and Indigenous Peoples 2009 report by Minority Rights Group International.
