Statement on Zomi National Day

February 20, 2009

February 20 is historical important day for the Zomi. More than
five thousands Zomi representatives gathered at Falam, a two days
conference held from February 18-20, 1948. The conference unanimously
passed a resolution to abolish autocratic system of hereditary to
introduce democratic system in Zogam.Today, Zomi are passing through an extraordinary time.In the face of oppression under successive military governments in
Myanmar, thousands of Zomi are forced to flee their homeland. Many young children and women are left to starvation in the wake
of Mautam famine in our land today. The government of Myanmar not only
failed to protect, but they are obstacles to the relief and development
efforts of Zomi abroad and the international community.Zomi had suffered enough the mismanagement of Burmese way to
socialism for more than 50 years.
They, at their free will, will not accept the Burmese way to democracy in
the year 2010, a sham national election to be held in Myanmar. The essence of Zomi National Day is democracy, freedom and unity. Zomi
National Day remind us the unfinished business that, we, the new
generation must accomplish. To meet the challenges of our time, we must unite and put our
collective interest before narrow local interest. The Zomi inside and
outside Myanmar must work together for the development of our homeland, to
realize freedom, democracy and peace in Zogam.
