The border road linking southern Chin state of
Paletwa and the southern Mizoram town of Saiha has been reconstructed by the
Chin people.

The road, which is 12 kms long and 3 feet wide, was
extended to a width of 6 feet, by the villagers of Para in Paletwa townships on
December 1, 2008.

Post the rainy season, the condition of roads
deteriorates in the southern Chin state. However, the villagers need to travel
to towns in Mizoram to get commodities of daily need, according to the village
headman of Para.

The villagers work once in a week and they have
completed a 2 km long stretch.

Paletwa Township has been hit by famine and the
villagers are totally dependent on goods from Mizoram. Villagers of Matupi
Township also use the border road for transporting their domestic animals to
Mizoram state.

According to a report, articles of aid, which are
provided by NGOs from Mizoram, are kept safely in Mizoram, due to the bad
condition of roads. Therefore, villagers have to go and fetch these articles on
foot, from the border areas of Mizoram.

President of CFERC, Mr. ChanThawng, told Khonumthung
News that the roads in Paletwa were worse than other roads in Chin state. A lot
of money was spent to provide any kind of relief material to the people of the
township due to the bad condition of the roads, he added.
